Darker workstations cause inefficiency. The added ambient light is intended to illuminate the area around the weld zone, so that old tired eyes, and young defective eyes can better see the markers of direction of travel and speed needed to get a good weld, no matter what shade you are using. It is adding to the reflected light surrounding the weld area, but only in a minute amount to the light coming from the arc, and the molten metal of the puddle.
